Hispanic Division: Back to 20th-Century Arrivals from Portugal Settle in Newark, NJ

Portuguese-American Newspaper Published in Newark, NJ

Ethnic-oriented newspapers have helped solidify immigrant communities. One such example, published in Newark, is the semi-weekly, Portuguese-American newspaper Luso-Americano. Founded in 1928, it is one of the oldest Portuguese-language newspapers in the United States and has one of the largest circulations. As the headlines featured on this front page from a recent issue indicate, the newspaper carries a mixture of national, state, and local news. Articles that are most directly related to the Portuguese-American community are stories about the Portuguese Heritage Scholarships totalling $40,000, a ribbon cutting initiating an airline flight between Newark and Lisbon, and the retirement of an Ironbound mailman (Mário Godinho), who may have travelled more than 86,000 miles during his career.
