The Library of Congress, in collaboration with Internet Archive, Web Archivist.org, and the Pew Internet & American Life Project, developed the September 11 Web Archive ( www.loc.gov/911/ ), dedicated to preserving Web expression of individuals, groups, the press, and institutions in the United States and from around the world in the aftermath of the attacks. The period of web site collection began within hours of the tragedy and continued through the first week of December 2001. During that period, the site grew to include 30,000 web sites. The Library of Congress's decision to create this archive was born out of a need to understand the unthinkable as well as a professional obligation to collect and document diverse historical and cultural experience.
