Stars and Stripes: U.S. Military Newspapers in the Library of Congress

Post-World War II Editions (Pacific)

Pacific editions of Stars and Stripes have been published in Tokyo since October 3, 1945 and are available at the Library of Congress. In addition to the main edition, which continues to be distributed to U.S. forces throughout the Pacific, the Library has incomplete collections of two regional editions: one that is distributed to United Nations Forces in Korea, and an Okinawa edition. Feature articles and syndicated columns appear in all editions; the regional editions also include news from and for the troops in their respective areas. A China edition of Stars and Stripes was published in Shanghai during 1945 and 1946 and is also available at the Library of Congress, as well as a collection of Far East Weekly Review, the news magazine published in Tokyo by Stars and Stripes.

The Library of Congress acquired issues from September 1, 1945 to April 13, 1946.

Magazine supplement; 19 issues published from November 3, 1945 to March 9, 1946 are available.

The Library of Congress has most issues for the years 1946 to 1985. The microfilm includes selected issues of the Five Star, Korea, Okinawa, and Vietnam editions.

The printed edition for U.S. forces in Korea was acquired by the Library of Congress from March 1, 1952 to December 31, 1960.

The printed edition published for U.S. forces on Okinawa was received by the Library of Congress from June 15, 1954 to June 30, 1958.

The Library's collection of Far East Weekly Review comprises issues published from January 26, 1946 to December 28, 1947.

The Library of Congress collection of the National Tribune can be requested in the Newspaper and Current Periodical Reading Room. The collection includes issues published over the 106-year period from October 1877 to December 1984.
