Description: BSC combines three resources for research in Black Studies - the Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience, the International Index to Black Periodicals (IIBP), and The Chicago Defender - to provide a fully cross-searchable gateway to scholarly essays, recent periodicals, historical newspaper articles, and other related sources.
- The Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience examines interdisciplinary topics on the African experience throughout the Americas via in-depth essays accompanied by detailed timelines along with important research articles, images, film clips and more. The essays are contributed by leading academic experts who have surveyed and analysed the most important existing research literature in their respective fields.
- IIBP contains current and retrospective bibliographic citations and abstracts from 150 scholarly and popular journals, newspapers, and newsletters from the United States, Africa, and the Caribbean--and full-text coverage of 40 core Black Studies periodicals (1998 forward).
Retrospective coverage includes 120,000 citations from over 56 publications, with records dating back to 1902. Coverage is international and multidisciplinary--spanning cultural, economic, historical, religious, social, and political issues of vital importance to the Black Studies discipline.
- The Chicago Defender contains the full text backfile, from 1935 to 1975, of one of the most widely-read black newspapers in the country (the paper began publishing on a daily basis in 1956).
Coverage: 1902 to present
