Afro-American Genealogical Research: How to Begin

Every beginning genealogist at the Library of Congress is urged to read "How To Begin" in the free publication, Genealogical Research at the Library of Congress, available in the Local History and Genealogy Reading Room. This introduction to genealogical procedure is applicable to everyone doing genealogical research.

Additionally, persons pursuing African American ancestors should then read a basic introduction to the special requirements of Afro-American genealogical research:
