National Marrow Donor Program

The mission of the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) is to help people who need a life-saving marrow or blood cell transplant. NMDP connects patients, doctors, donors and researchers to resources they need to help more people live longer, healthier lives.

NMDP was established in 1986 and NMDP's Office of Patient Advocacy was established in 1991. The Office of Patient Advocacy works with a network of 112 transplants centers in the United States to provide services such as case management, financial advocacy, search advocacy, and special advocacy, which are those activities that have indirect impact or benefits to their clients such as strategies to address barriers to health care services, outreach to the medically underserved communities, and collaborative work with other organizations such as CDC.

Partnership Activities

NMDP will use its existing infrastructure to identify barriers and communication need; create age-specific communication materials on blood and marrow transplants; increase patient access to information on the blood and marrow transplant process through alternative methods; work and partner with other organizations to disseminate information and increase awareness of targeted materials on blood and marrow transplants; and increase recruitment of volunteer caregivers for peer support.

Specifically, NMDP's Office of Patient Advocacy is working to develop materials that are targeted for patients aged and 50 and older, their families, and caregivers. These materials will include information in print and on video and DVD to educate patients about the blood and marrow transplantation process. The Office of Patient Advocacy is also working to identify and train volunteer caregivers.
