School and Group Tours

Docent-led guided tours of the permanent collection, special exhibitions, and the Sculpture Garden are available upon request. Museum educators can also help teachers plan visits that meet specific curriculum needs.

The following specially themed tours for school groups can be arranged through the Education Department. To schedule a tour, call 202-633-3382, at least eight weeks in advance.

Shape and Color (grades pre K-3):

Discover how artists use shape and color as building blocks for their paintings and sculptures.

Magical Media (grades 4-12):
Explore the wide range of materials artists use to make their work. (Teacher packet available)

Global Visions (grades 5-12):
Discover how art forms reflect the values and beliefs of world cultures and ethnic communities.

The Story of Modern Art (all ages):
Learn about the changing styles of the art of the twentieth century. (Teacher Packet available)

Modern and Contemporary Sculpture (all ages):
Trace the evolution of sculpture from the late nineteenth century to the present.

Teacher Resources

Educational packets are available on loan to teachers and schools upon request. Printed packets may include artist information, classroom activities, slides, and color reproductions. To order printed packets, contact the Education Department at 202-633-3382 or send e-mail to hmsgeducation@si.edu.
