Linking and Learning: Lessons for Afterschool from Early Childhood System-Building Efforts (PDF)

Summary: This paper describes eleven lessons that the after-school community can learn from system-building efforts in the field of early care and education. The following lessons are valuable for anyone working to improve the care and education of children, regardless of children’s age: (1) invest in infrastructure; (2) invest in staff development; (3) promote program standards; (4) cultivate sustainable funding streams; (5) encourage rigorous, high-profile evaluations; (6) recognize the power of data; (7) raise the profile of adolescent brain development research; (8) make quality transparent to parents and policy-makers; (9) create a shared identity; (10) join forces to create a united voice for children; and (11) connect to efforts that focus on school success.
