Guidelines for Preschool Learning Experiences (PDF)

Summary: This document presents the Massachusetts Guidelines for Preschool Learning Experiences. Guidelines are offered for the following subjects: English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Technology/Engineering, History and Social Science, Health Education, and the Arts. Ideas for learning experiences are listed for each subject. Guidelines focus on what staff should do to help young children develop needed skills and knowledge. They have been designed to help teachers and program administrators in planning and evaluating curriculum. The following principles serve as a guide in understanding and implementing the guidelines: (1) all young children are capable of learning, (2) children show individual differences in development, (3) knowledge of child growth and development is essential for program development and implementation, (4) children’s language skills are the best predictors of academic success, (5) developmental domains are highly interrelated, (6) young children learn by doing, and (7) families are the primary caregivers and educators of their young children. Contains approximately 160 references.
