Summary

Pursuant to a legislative requirement, GAO reviewed the Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) new rule on, standards for electronic transactions. GAO noted that: (1) the new rule would adopt standards for eight electronic transactions and for codes sets used in those transactions and requires the use of these standards by health plans, health care clearinghouses, and certain health care providers; and (2) HHS complied with applicable requirements in promulgating the rule.
