Evaluation of Regulatory Approaches to Lead Poisoning Prevention
Description of Session
Elimination of lead poisoning for children under six years is within our reach if we adopt ever more creative approaches to primary prevention efforts. Primary prevention requires that children's environments be made lead-safe before their blood lead levels become elevated. Policy and regulations are some of the best tools we have in this effort. This session examines the enforcement of the one federal regulation we have in lead poisoning prevention, the Lead Disclosure Rule. The panel will discuss the rule and its implementation, surveillance data analysis for strategic targeting, and the evaluation of the process and outcomes of enforcement. Public health as a field can only benefit from increased attention and resources devoted to consistent applied program evaluation. A model for teaching and training the current and emerging public health workforce to use program evaluation will be presented.
