The Local Environmental Health Workforce: Confronting the Challenges of the 21st Century
Description of Session
An expanding population and its related impact on housing, water, waste disposal, vectors, and air quality has put stress on local environmental health programs to address these issues. Add to this the demographics of an aging workforce and the increasing cultural and language diversity of the expanding population, and the challenge to local environmental health programs to provide efficient and effective services is enhanced. The challenges of the 21st Century call for an environmental health workforce capable of anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling environmental health problems. Addressing the need of a well prepared environmental health workforce can include requiring a formal education in environmental health science for entry level positions, combining responsibilities into a generalist position, and addressing the changing cultural and language demographics by establishing “environmental health technician” positions. A panel of three environmental health managers will discuss and share their experience with these proposals. Each panel member will make a brief presentation, with adequate time for discussion.
