Summary: This monograph outlines key moments in Smart Start’s history from 1993-2001. The Smart Start initiative was started in 1993 to ensure that every child in North Carolina begins school healthy and prepared to succeed. The initiative brings government, the nonprofit sector, business, civic, faith and community groups, and families together to improve the lives of young children and their families. Smart Start contains several key elements; it is community-based, state-supported, and receives significant private-sector investments.
