Click on a state in the list above to see
a listing of the light stations located in that state. If you know the name
of the station, but do not know which state, check the alphabetical
listing. Note that the year in parentheses refers to the year in which
the light was first lit in the existing tower. In early 1999, the U.S. Lighthouse
Society provided valuable assistance in revising this list to include only
light stations which were once kept by a resident keeper and where a historic
tower(s) survives intact. Lists of significant unmanned
aids and former stations are also being developed. In cases where we
have learned of the destruction of a lighthouse tower after the page was
created, we kept the page and labeled it as a "site."
In 1994, the National Park Service National Maritime Initiative's published the 1994 Inventory of Historic Light Stations; this publication is out of print. An update of the Inventory was begun in September 1998. As the records are updated, complete Inventory information is being linked to each light station. Documented corrections and additions should be directed to Maritime Heritage Program, National Park Service, 1849 C Street NW (2261), Washington, DC 20240.
Please note that the U.S. Coast Guard Historian's Office is posting lighthouse
photos from their collection at their Historic
Light Station Information and Photography site. |
