Six fledgling State Conservationists (STCs) were in Indiana recently for the
new NRCS State Conservationist Administrative Training.
The training was conceptualized over a year ago by Regional Assistant Chief ―
West Sara Braasch and proved invaluable for the State conservationists who
participated. This year’s training was focused on budget processes and a
variety of sample management reports. It was a valuable lesson on
understanding the policies and regulations that apply to management and
execution of the budget ― critical for new and experienced STCs alike.
NHQ management analyst Debbie Curtis and Indiana NRCS State Administrative
Officer Elana Cass both have numerous years of experience in budget
administration. Indiana NRCS State Conservationist Jane Hardisty provided
invaluable perspectives from her years of practical experience at the State
level. This year’s “graduates” included Wyoming STC Xavier Montoya, New
Hampshire STC George Cleek, New Jersey STC Tom Drewes, Kentucky STC Mike Hubbs,
Michigan STC Garry Lee, and West Virginia STC Kevin Wickey.
