This is the southern most section of the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area (NCA).

The NCA was established in 1988 by the United States Congress to protect and enhance the riparian ecosystem and related resources.

Riparian areas are places where plants and animals thrive because of an availability of water either at or near the land surface.

This section of the river is usually dry in the summer, until summer monsoons replenish its banks. The roots of the larger cottonwood and willow trees are deep enough to reach the ground water, enabling them to survive the dry seasons and provide valuable habitat for a variety of species.

Birds use the San Pedro as a migratory pathway and for nesting. A variety of grassland and riparian species can be seen in this area.

Vehicles are allowed on the road from HWY 92 to the Mexican Border as well as horses, bicycles and hikers.  Motorized vehicles must stay on this road, off road travel is not permitted.

Bicycles should stay on established roads.

Hunting is permitted only during established seasons with a valid Arizona Hunting License. Use of firearms for this purpose is permitted. Plinking, or target shooting, is not permitted.

The Windmill along this road was restored by the Friends of the San Pedro River, a volunteer group who assists the BLM in the management of the NCA. It provides much needed water to wildlife in the area.

Take Pride in your public lands. Report vandalism and other illegal activity. Do not dump or litter. Leave the area better than you found it.
