2008 Conservation Security Program

CSP is a voluntary program that rewards agricultural producers who have a documented history of good land stewardship.  The Natural Resources Conservation Service administers this program and provides financial and technical assistance to eligible producers.

2008 Ohio CSP Watershed

The Sandusky Watershed was selected as the next watershed in Ohio to offer CSP.

Watershed Description

Fencing practiceThe Sandusky Watershed covers approximately 1,212,500 acres in Crawford, Erie, Hardin, Huron, Marion, Ottawa, Richland, Sandusky, Seneca, Wood, and Wyandot Counties in north central Ohio. 

Land use in this watershed is primarily cropland, with 104,100 acres of forest and 70,500 acres of urban land.  Recently the watershed has witnessed a dramatic increase in housing development.  The topography in the watershed ranges from flat to rolling terrain in the upper section of the watershed to very rolling terrain in the lower portions of the watershed. 

In the Sandusky Watershed there are about 4,200 farms operations covering about 860,800 acres of cropland. The average farm size in the Sandusky Watershed is 289 acres.  Primary crops include soybeans, corn and small grains.  Nursery, small fruit, vegetable and greenhouse crops are also important to the economy.

Livestock operations in the Sandusky Watershed including dairy, beef, hogs, horses, goats, and chickens.  Pastureland in the watershed consists of about 18,700 acres.  Much of this pasture is fair quality cool season grasses.

2008 CSP Contract Payments

Annual Stewardship Payments
An annual component for the existing base level of conservation treatment (all contracts will have stewardship payments)

A practice component will be calculated to equal 25% of the contract's annual Stewardship Payment (All contracts will have an existing practice component)

Enhancement Component Payment of Contract TBD (depends on enhancements chosen)

Enhancement Component
An enhancement component for exceptional conservation effort and additional conservation practices or activities that provide increased resource benefits beyond the prescribed level (most contract will have an enhancement component)
