Association
of State and Territorial Health
Officials
The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials
(ASTHO) is a non-profit public health
organization that represents the leaders of
State and Territorial health agencies. ASTHO members
work collectively to formulate and influence
sound national health policy and to develop
and implement state programs and policies that promote health and prevent illness and
disability to improve quality of life. |

Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention,
HHS
The CDC Office of Genomics and Disease Prevention (OGDP) was
established in 1997. Integrating knowledge of human genetics
into effective and ethical public health actions is an
important element in CDC’s mission. OGDP provides a
CDC-wide focus for coordinating genetics efforts which
cross-cut prevention activities and supports public-private
partnerships for the collection and dissemination of
information on the appropriate use of genetic testing.
Overall, the Office provides national leadership in genetics
prevention research and the use of science in making sound
public health decisions. |

Health
Resources and Services Administration,
HHS
The Health Resources and Services Administrations
(HRSA) mission is to increase access
to basic health care for those who
are medically undeserved through support
of community health centers, maternal and
child programs, and health professional training
programs.
The Genetic Services Branchs (Maternal
and Child Health Bureau, HRSA) mission
is to facilitate the early identification of
children with genetic conditions to integrate them
into population and community-based, family
centered systems of care. |

National
Human Genome Research Institute, NIH,
HHS
The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) at the
National Institutes of Health (NIH) is a lead U.S. sponsor
of the Human Genome Project. When completed, the entire
human genome will be mapped and new testing technologies
will be developed.. This information will enable scientists
to further understand the genetic factors related to health
and disease and will allow for the development of better
treatments and prevention interventions. A critical element
of the Human Genome Project is the exploration of the
ethical, legal, and social implications of the discovery and
use of genetic information. |
