Program in Brief Buildings are everywhere. In fact, of the more than 78,801 listings in the National Register of Historic Places, nearly 71% are historic buildings--houses, schools, city halls, social halls, churches, libraries, courthouses, stores, barns, factories and mills, hotels, armories, and train depots. Now, as in the past, they continue to provide shelter and support human activity. But more than that, historic buildings represent America's democratic, spiritual, and educational ideals, and also serve to document our commercial success for over two centuries. Unfortunately, building materials (masonry, wood, and architectural metals) are all subject to damage, decay, and loss over time. With ongoing preservation, however, the historic buildings that define our neighborhoods, towns, and cities will survive for future generations to use and enjoy.

Who We Are
Technical Preservation Services helps home owners, preservation professionals, organizations, and government agencies preserve and protect this nation's heritage by providing readily available materials--guidance pamphlets and books, videos, and our Web home page--on preserving, restoring, and rehabilitating historic buildings. Technical Preservation Services is dedicated to improving the quality of work on our nation's historic buildings by promoting their long-term preservation and fostering the responsible use of both traditional and innovative techniques in their care and maintenance.

Program Partners
Technical Preservation Services plays a pivotal role in developing nationally recognized conferences on key preservation issues of the day and in conducting training programs in partnership with universities, public agencies, and professional organizations.

Statistics
Most federal and state government organizations, and many local historic districts have adopted the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation developed by Technical Preservation Services. They also utilize the guidance contained in TPS publications, such as the Preservation Briefs series, on the treatment and care of historic properties.

  • Technical Preservation Services has produced over 120 publications that are readily available to the public, reaching an audience of over 400,000 people who are involved in the care and rehabilitation of historic properties.

  • By developing and presenting leading national conferences, Technical Preservation Services reaches thousands of the key decision-makers and technical experts involved in the preservation and rehabilitation of historic buildings and other properties.

  • Technical Preservation Services provides technical consultation provided for work involving many of our nation's most significant historic properties, including National Historic Landmarks and prominent federally-owned buildings; and state and privately-owned properties.
