a The U.S. Geologic Survey (USGS) estimated that
13% of the U.S. population consumed water from private wells in
2000. Although the USGS
survey and Water Fluoridation Reporting System both use data provided by the
EPA and state programs, the USGS obtains additional data on private wells.
Differences in methods used produced different estimates for percentage of
the U.S. population served by private wells.
