Healthy KidsMemphis City Schools in Tennessee receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The goal of the Memphis City Schools HIV prevention program is to implement effective policies and educational strategies to prevent HIV infection among youth.

Memphis' Program In Action

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Using a training cadre to provide professional development on HIV prevention for teachers, school nurses, alternative school staff, and staff of community-based organizations.

  • Providing training for parents on positive parenting practices and for peer educators on youth refusal skills.

  • Training middle school teachers on interventions to reach high-risk African-American youth and creating an advisory committee to develop a plan for delivering prevention services to Hispanic students and their families.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS to collect data on youth risk behaviors that are representative of Memphis City students in grades 9–12 and compiling trend and comparison reports of the data.

  • Providing trainings for local education agencies and community partners on how to use YRBS data.

  • Disseminating YRBS data on the Memphis City Schools web site and in resource kits provided to community agencies that serve students in Memphis City Schools.
