Healthy KidsHawaii receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The goal of Hawaii’s HIV prevention education program is to strengthen the capacity of schools to provide effective HIV/AIDS prevention education to students.

Hawaii's Program In Action

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Convening an HIV/AIDS/STI advisory council to assess the needs of Hawaii’s youth and advise on strategic planning and program direction.

  • Reviewing and revising current state HIV prevention education policies to reflect national model policies.

  • Providing training for school staff on implementing the statewide HIV prevention curriculum and HIV prevention programs for youth at highest risk of HIV infection.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Collaborating with the University of Hawaii Curriculum Research and Development Group to continue to collect YRBS data representative of Hawaii students in grades 9 −12.

  • Distributing information collected from the YRBS to statewide agencies, members of the statewide school health consortium, district staff, and community-based organizations.

  • Training local education agency staff to use the YRBS data to inform program planning.
