Wisconsin's Program In Action

Promoting Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

• Providing professional development on effective curricula, instruction, and assessment regarding physical activity, nutrition, tobacco use prevention, and related health issues to increase the skills and knowledge of educators.
   
• Sponsoring activities for students and family members to promote physical activity that is consistent with CDC guidelines on increasing physical activity.
   
• Collaborating with the Governor’s Office and the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services to sponsor a school awards program recognizing Wisconsin schools that develop policies, programs, and infrastructure to create and maintain healthy school environments.
   
• Providing professional development to increase the knowledge and skills of educators to address the needs of youth at greatest risk for physical inactivity, unhealthy eating, and tobacco use.
   
• Collaborating and coordinating three cross-agency programs to strengthen state and local school health programs addressing PANT.

Providing HIV Prevention Education

• Providing professional development for schools and youth-serving organizations to increase their capacity to provide HIV prevention education for youth of color, runaway and homeless youth, and sexual minority youth.
   
• Using a variety of media to disseminate effective HIV prevention program policies and practices.
   
• Communicating, coordinating and collaborating with key stakeholders, including parents and youth, to support school and community-based HIV prevention programs.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

• Administering the YRBS to collect health risk behavior data that are representative of Wisconsin students in grades 9–12.
   
• Disseminating the results of the YRBS to stakeholders statewide and using the data to track critical health behaviors among the state’s youth.
   
• Using YRBS data to strengthen and increase health programs and resources and to identify health disparities impacting youth.
