Healthy KidsThe Vermont Department of Education receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent & School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The Department is working to improve the health of Vermont’s school-aged children through policy changes, creation of school health teams, provision of professional development opportunities, and collaboration with other state agencies.

Vermont's Program In Action

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Collaborating with partners to involve youth in HIV prevention efforts directed toward reaching incarcerated, homeless, and runaway youth.

  • Providing a cadre of adjunct faculty trained in HIV prevention and sexuality education to work with the Vermont Department of Corrections.

  • Establishing a cadre of HIV positive speakers available to present in schools across the state to enhance their HIV prevention programs.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Collaborating with an interagency workgroup to determine the content of the YRBS survey.

  • Providing an in-depth analysis of YRBS data on sub-group populations at high risk for health disparities.

  • Disseminating YRBS data to schools, health agencies, partners, decision-makers, and on the Vermont Department of Health Web site.
