Territorial Agencies Guam
The
Guam Public School System receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent
and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth
Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The goal of the Guam Public School System’s HIV
prevention program is to increase the knowledge and skills of school-age
youth and empower them to prevent HIV, STDs, and unintended pregnancy.
Guam's Program In Action
Providing HIV
Prevention Education
- Developing a coalition with representatives from the Guam Parent
Teacher Association Congress, the University of Guam Cooperative
Extension Service, the media, faith-based organizations, and other
community organizations to inform HIV prevention education programs and
provide community support.
- Collaborating with the University of Guam to provide year-round
professional development to classroom teachers, guidance counselors, and
public agency health educators to improve their knowledge and skills in
providing HIV prevention education.
- Working with the existing Comprehensive School Health Education
Program to assure that HIV prevention education is delivered within a
coordinated school health program.
Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- Administering the YRBS to collect health risk behavior data that are
representative of Guam students in grades 9–12.
- Publishing the YRBS results and using them to guide program
planning.
- Developing classroom activities that are guided by and focused on
the results of the YRBS.
