Healthy KidsNew York State’s Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) is a collaborative effort between the New York State Departments of Education and Health. The CSHP works with schools, school districts, local health departments, governmental agencies, and professional organizations to improve the health and academic success of New York State’s children through the implementation of the eight-component CSHP model. New York State receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

New York's Program In Action

Promoting Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

  • Administering the Healthy School Recognition Program to recognize school districts for promoting PANT in schools.

  • Partnering with the New York State Youth Development Team, the New York State Regional Tobacco Coordinators, and the New York State Consortium for School Health Wellness Policy Implementation to enhance support for CSHPs.

  • Providing professional development and technical assistance to support schools in implementing the School Health Index.

  • Developing partnerships with institutions of higher education to facilitate a healthy transition through the education system into adult life.

  • Providing professional development to schools using the American Cancer Society’s Leadership Institute model to build organizational capacity, evaluate the school environment, and develop program sustainability.

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Collaborating with State agencies and nongovernmental organizations to coordinate efforts to prevent HIV among youth experiencing the greatest health and academic disparities.

  • Disseminating information on effective HIV prevention policies to all schools across the state.

  • Providing technical assistance for school districts on improving the implementation of HIV prevention education programs and policies.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS to collect data on youth risk behaviors that are representative of New York students in grades 9 −12.

  • Creating a document to summarize YRBS results.

  • Posting the YRBS results report online and distributing hard copies to key stakeholders and decision makers throughout the state.
