Healthy KidsThe Nevada Department of Education receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The Nevada Department of Education partners with key groups throughout the state to better reach all youth with HIV prevention education.

Nevada's Program In Action

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Providing training and technical assistance for teachers in evidence-based approaches to HIV prevention with an emphasis on school districts where data have indicated a lack of HIV prevention education.

  • Partnering with the Nevada Area Health Education Center to work with Hispanic/Latino parents across the state to encourage parent-child communication and parental involvement in HIV prevention education in the home.

  • Developing a policy to ensure that HIV/AIDS prevention instruction is provided to students as required by Nevada Statue NRS. 389.065.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS to collect youth risk behavior data that are representative of Nevada students in grades 6−12.

  • Analyzing YRBS data and compiling, publishing, and distributing YRBS data summaries.

  • Educating local decision makers on how to use YRBS data to inform program planning.
