Healthy KidsMichigan’s Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) is a collaborative effort between the Michigan Department of Education and the Michigan Department of Community Health. Michigan receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The goal of the CSHP is to improve the health and academic success of Michigan’s children and youth.

Michigan's Program In Action

Promoting Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

  • Providing funding and technical assistance to low-income, high-priority school districts to participate in the MICHIANA Coordinated School Health Leadership Institute.

  • Supporting regional School Health Coordinators in their efforts to implement curricula developed to promote physical activity, healthy eating, and tobacco use prevention.

  • Providing technical assistance to institutions of higher education to improve their ability to provide pre-service education that meets Michigan teacher preparatory standards and produces well-prepared health and physical education teachers.

  • Developing a local wellness policy implementation toolkit detailing lessons learned, implementation strategies, and resources, and disseminating the toolkit to school districts and state-level partners.

  • Developing and disseminating policy guidance to assist school districts in implementing the Michigan State Board of Education 24/7 Tobacco Free Schools policy.

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Conducting a Training of Trainers workshop for school health coordinators on how to deliver effective HIV prevention education professional development to teachers.

  • Providing intensive technical assistance to support high need school districts in their efforts to facilitate the adoption of effective HIV prevention curricula.

  • Providing training, technical assistance, and resources to assist educators in implementing policies and practices that make school environments physically and emotionally safe for all students.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Collaborating with the Michigan Department of Community Health, Detroit Public Schools, and the Michigan Inter-Tribal Council to administer the Michigan YRBS.

  • Developing and disseminating topic-specific fact sheets and an Executive Summary Report to summarize the results of the YRBS.

  • Working with the Michigan Department of Community Health and other statewide organizations to integrate YRBS data into their program plans, grants, and publications.
