Healthy KidsThe Baltimore City Public School System (BCPSS) in Maryland receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The goals of the BCPSS HIV/AIDS prevention education project are to develop HIV/AIDS education policy and curricula, provide professional development for instructional staff, and evaluate the program to ensure effectiveness.

Baltimore's Program In Action

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Developing and delivering professional development on HIV prevention for administrators, teachers, and other school staff.

  • Providing the skills-based Positive Voices! Positive Choices HIV/AIDS Prevention Education Program to middle and high school students, youth attending community programs, and staff of youth-serving agencies.

  • Collaborating with the Baltimore City Health Department to establish the Healthy Teens and Young Adults Program (BCHD-HTYA) to provide human reproductive health education for students in middle and high schools without a school-based health center.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS to collect data on youth risk behaviors that are representative of Baltimore students in grades 9–12.

  • Disseminating the YRBS results to school administrators, school decision makers, and relevant community organizations across the district.

  • Using YRBS data to develop, review, and revise curricula and programs to meet the needs of the students of BCPSS.
