Healthy KidsThe School District of Palm Beach County in Florida receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The goals of the Palm Beach County Public Schools HIV/AIDS Prevention Program are to increase the number of youth in grades 6–12 who receive HIV/AIDS prevention education, enhance HIV prevention through community collaborations, ensure that all school district staff receive training in HIV prevention, and continuously assess the program’s strengths and weaknesses to inform future program planning.

Palm Beach County's Program In Action

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Developing age-appropriate HIV/AIDS prevention education activities for students in grades K–11.
     
  • Implementing HIV/AIDS prevention programs for youth at greatest risk for HIV, STDs, and unintended pregnancy.
     
  • Designing and implementing professional development on HIV prevention education strategies for teachers and partners.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS to collect data on youth risk behaviors that are representative of Palm Beach County students in middle and high school.
     
  • Developing a YRBS brochure to summarize key results and describe trends in health behaviors over time.
     
  • Disseminating the YRBS brochure to the superintendent and other key district staff, school board members, Palm Beach County Department of Health, School Health Advisory Council, other community partners, and school nurses.
