Orange
County Public Schools in Florida receives funding from CDC’s Division of
Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct
the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The Orange County Public Schools
HIV/AIDS Prevention Program aims to increase the number of youth in grades
6–12 who understand the consequences of sexual activity and how to prevent
HIV infection, and to provide leadership to schools, parents, and the
community to strengthen the prevention of HIV, STDs, and unintended
pregnancy among youth.

Providing HIV
Prevention Education
- Providing professional development for teachers and school staff on
exemplary HIV curricula, established district HIV policies, and human
sexuality education guidelines.
- Assessing the quality of classroom instruction in HIV prevention
received by students in grades 6–12, as well as teacher satisfaction and
knowledge regarding policies, programs, resources, professional
development, and technical assistance related to HIV prevention.
- Collaborating with community-based organizations to implement HIV
prevention programs for African American, Latino, and sexual minority
youth.
Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- Administering the YRBS to collect data on youth risk behaviors that
are representative of Orange County students in grades 9–12.
- Creating a variety of materials, including a report, slide
presentation, pamphlets, flyers, and posters, to present a comparison of
YRBS data for Orange County over time.
- Collaborating with the Orange County Health Department to distribute
YRBS materials to community agencies and district personnel, including
the superintendent.
