Biographical/Historical Data: |
John A. Lomax was a professor of English and co-founder of the Texas Folklore Society. In 1934, Lomax was named Honorary Consultant and Curator of the Archive of American Folk Song at the Library of Congress. He secured grants from the Carnegie Corporation and the Rockefeller Foundation, among others, for continued field work to fund this recording trip through the southern states. He was accompanied by his son, Alan Lomax, on most of these recording trips.

Collection of field recordings made on instantaneous discs with performances by numerous musicians and speakers including: Mexican and Mexican-American corridos, vaquero songs, and folk songs recorded in Texas; Cajun music and Creole music recorded in Louisiana; African American songs and music recorded in work houses and prisons across the south, including blues performances by Leadbelly (Huddie Ledbetter) recorded at Angola State Penitentiary, Louisiana; and hymns, sermons, and testimony recorded in African American churches in several states. Also recorded were cowboy songs, ballads, blues, dance music, fiddle tunes, work songs, spirituals, gospel music, and African American children's games and songs.

Field recordings were made primarily in Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, North Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina. Leadbelly and Aunt Molly Jackson were also recorded in Wilton, Connecticut.
