Visiting Grant's
Headquarters at City Point, Petersburg National
Battlefield, Hopewell, VA
You can venture into the past by visiting Grant's
Headquarters at City Point, in the Petersburg
National Battlefield, located in the town now
known as Hopewell, Virginia. This National Park
Service site presently consists of 10 units
totaling just over 2,700 acres extending 35
miles. It includes the City Point Unit, the
Main Unit where much of the hardest fighting
occurred, and the Five Forks Unit where Lee's
Confederate defenses were finally over-stretched.
Seven days after the fall of Petersburg, the
Civil War in Virginia was over.
From June 9, 1864 until April 2, 1865 over an
area covering 700 square miles south of the
James River, two armies fought 6 major battles,
11 engagements, 44 skirmishes, 6 assaults, 9
actions, 3 expeditions and 1 affair, resulting
in 70,000 casualties.
