The National Institute for Occupational Safety
and Health (NIOSH) is working to develop appropriate standards and test
procedures for respiratory devices used to protect workers in hazardous
environments.
Public Meetings are held
to discuss standards concepts for these respirator classes. Presentations
from these meetings are also available.
Concepts, standards (when fully developed), and other documents will
be posted when they become available.
Industrial Powered, Air-Purifying Respirators

Closed-circuit Escape Module
NIOSH has initiated a program to update portions of 42 CFR Part 84
to promote improved performance and reliability of Closed-circuit Self-contained
Escape Breathing Apparatus, which includes Self Contained Self Rescuers.
Quality Assurance Module
NIOSH has initiated a program to update the Quality Assurance and Quality
Control portions of 42 CFR Part 84 to promote improved respirator quality
and reliability. This program also seeks to address administrative issues
and fees in 42 CFR Part 84 which need to be updated, and provide a new
format for air-purifying respirator labels.

Total Inward Leakage (TIL) Program
NIOSH has initiated a program to establish TIL performance requirements
and laboratory test capability for testing of personal protective equipment
(PPE), including all classes of respirators and protective garments.
