U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings kicked off the fifth meeting of her Commission on the Future of Higher Education yesterday at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C. The Commission will discuss access, affordability, accountability, innovation and workforce development among other topics in sessions Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.

"We've already succeeded in one of our main goals and that is to elevate the public debate and discourse on issues of higher education," said Secretary Spellings. "More than ever higher education is critical not only to individual success, but to our country's success as well."

Secretary Spellings formed the Commission on the Future of Higher Education in order to develop a comprehensive national strategy for postsecondary education that will meet the needs of America's diverse population. The Commission, made up of university officials, business leaders, policymakers and researchers, is charged with asking the tough questions and anticipating the necessary changes that need to be made now to ensure that our higher education system continues to remain the finest in the world.
