There are three kinds of data or metrics provided in NDE queries. These are selected among the performance measures, which offer different ways of presenting the same metrics.

Average scale scores are the simplest measures of student performance. They reflect student performance on an arbitrary scale of 0-300 or 0-500, depending on the subject. Scale score data can be selected either alone or with percentages or standard deviation data.

Achievement level data classifies students into one of four groups, based on their score: below basic, at or above basic, at or above proficient, advanced. Achievement data can be presented cumulatively, grouping advanced and proficient students with larger groups. Achievement level data can also be presented discretely or individually for each group, with the total percentages summing to 100.

Percentile data identifies the actual scores under which some percentage of the student population scores. For example, if 25 percent of the student body scores lower than 325, then 325 is the 25th percentile.

Two measures contain percentage data. Not to be confused with percentiles, percentages do not reflect student performance at all, but track demographics and other factors that may be related to education.
