OutbreakNet collects surveillance information submitted by states on foodborne illness caused by infection with a variety of bacterial pathogens. The states collect information about specific infections of public health importance from doctors and clinical laboratories, such as the date of illness, the age, sex and county of residence of the ill person, and characteristics of the infecting pathogen.

An outbreak of foodborne illness is a cluster of 2 or more infections caused by the same agent (pathogen or toxin) which upon investigation are linked to the same food. Many outbreaks are detected and investigated by county and state health departments. CDC helps investigate those that are particularly widespread, severe or unusual. OutbreakNet works closely with local and state health departments to investigate foodborne disease outbreaks and make information available to the public. Reported data on foodborne disease outbreaks are valuable in establishing a link between foodborne illness and specific foods or situations that caused it. Take a closer look at the data on foodborne disease outbreaks provided in this site
