The U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings named Katherine McLane as Press Secretary at the U.S. Department of Education, effective immediately. The Press Secretary serves as the primary spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Education.

"Katherine is a talented communicator who brings experience and integrity to the position," said Secretary Spellings. "She gained a strong understanding of education issues during her time on Gov. Schwarzenegger's staff. She also knows the importance of being responsive to reporters while clearly representing the position of the Department. I am thrilled to have Katherine on our team."

McLane joins the Department after serving two and a half years in Governor Schwarzenegger's administration, most recently as spokesperson for the governor on education, military, federal, homeland security and emergency response issues. She also served as the governor's deputy communications director responsible for web-based communications, the governor's weekly radio address and events direction. During the 2003 gubernatorial recall campaign, McLane was Press Advance Director, coordinating logistics for state, local, national, international and entertainment media for Governor Schwarzenegger's campaign.

Prior to her service in California, McLane worked in the media division of Public Strategies, Inc., in Austin, TX, on strategic communications planning, television production and regulatory advertising for clients. McLane earned her B.A. in English from Texas A&M University and is fluent in German.
