Buccaneer Days
In 1938, the Corpus Christi Beach Association
decided to stage a celebration based on the history and legend of
the days of long ago when pirate ships sailed the waters of the
Gulf and preyed on merchantmen. The original festivities have
evolved into an annual 24-day celebration with a pirate theme
including more than 23 tournaments and special events, among which
are a triathlon, rodeo, remote-control plane festival, archery and
twirling competitions, an international handball tournament, and a
national orchestral music festival that brings in 6,000 children.
The non-profit event raises funds to finance scholarships and a
host of civic programs. Held for over 62 years, Buccaneer Days now
draws over 1.2 million people. Text, programs, newspaper clippings,
and photographs make up the project documentation.
