Corning, New York: The Crystal City
Dubbed "Crystal City" in 1902 by a New York
journalist, Corning had two glass factories and more than a dozen
glass cutting shops at the turn of the century, employing several
thousand workers in the industry. Today the legacy of their
glass-making lives on in collections all over the country and in
the Corning Museum of Glass. In May 2000 the Museum opened a new
permanent exhibit on the history of glass-making in the Crystal
City.
