Growing Up on the Saint Joseph River

Explores the impact of the river on the history, industry, and culture of South Bend. There have been two constants in the South Bend community. First, immigrants have fueled and nurtured the growth of the city from the French in the 1600s to the Hispanic and Latin population today. Secondly, the St. Joseph River has always been the heart of South Bend, starting with the Miami and Potawatomi Indians. The presence of this river made the area a natural trade stop and, later, a center for production and commerce.
