Yaqui Mural Project

During the first half of 1999, the Yaqui community produced a series of panels depicting their social, cultural, economic, and political contributions to Scottsdale. The subject matter of the murals came from interviews conducted by Yaqui youth with community elders. The San Francisco artist Mario Martinez, a native of the village of Penjamo in the Scottsdale area, returned home to work with the community on the murals.

Project documentation in a large beautifully bound album comprises a 10-page written report, several flyers and event programs, newspaper and magazine coverage, a press release, four color photos of the mural, four color photos of young artists at work, two photographs of Mario Martinez, 11 historical photographs of Yaqui elders; and a twelve-minute video about Yaqui culture in Arizona.
