Annual Quilt Show at the
Springville Museum
Since 1973, this exhibit has been held in June
of each year at the Springville Museum to showcase locally
made quilts. Quilting has been a part of Utah history and
culture since the Mormon pioneers settled in the Salt Lake
Valley in 1847, and the art has been passed down from mother
to daughter, friend to neighbor since that time. The show,
appropriately held at an
art museum,
demonstrates the creativity and meticulous work of those
creating these family heirlooms. The artistic designs,
comprising elements such as pattern, arrangement, color
choice, size, style, and type of fabric, and the storytelling
motifs used in the quilts reflect local history and
culture.
The project is documented with a report on the
history and cultural context of the exhibit, details of show, 30
color slides, a sound recording of Museum officials, quilters, and
show visitors, and programs and newspaper coverage of the
event.
