Prater's Mill
This celebration of northwestern Georgia's
cultural traditions is held on the grounds of a historic
water-powered grist mill built in 1855 on the Coahulla Creek.
Twice each year, on Mother's Day and Columbus Day weekends,
the mill resumes operation, grinding yellow and white corn
meal. Other old-time industries are demonstrated, including
blacksmithing, flint-knapping, and chair-making. Traditional
southern foods such as hoecakes and poke salad are served, and
a range of music styles from southern Appalachia are
performed. Arts and crafts exhibits, antique engines, a Civil
War encampment, and barnyard animals are on view. In its 30th
year, the fair supports preservation of the mill, country
store, and cotton gin.
