Troy Strawberry Festival

Fulton Farms, just outside of Troy in Miami County, is the largest single producer of strawberries in Ohio and the Midwest, making Troy the "Strawberry Capital of Ohio." Promoting the local crop, the Troy Strawberry Festival, sponsored by the Troy Chamber of Commerce, originated in 1977 as a family-oriented festival to provide fun and wholesome entertainment and to serve as a means for local clubs and organizations to raise funds for their community activities. Held the first weekend of June, the festival has grown to be a major celebration of early summer in southwest Ohio, now attracting 250,000 festival-goers to the small town of Troy, Ohio (pop. 20,000). The event owes its success to the joint efforts of the City of Troy, the Troy Area Chamber of Commerce, and volunteers who spend thousands of hours manning booths, building parade floats, serving on committees, cooking food, stemming strawberries, and guiding visitors. Festival highlights include a two-hour parade; fine arts and crafts show; nature art exhibition; sporting, children's, and river events (canoe, hovercraft and raft races, waterski show); food and game booths; free outdoor entertainment; bed races; a hot air balloon rally; and car show.

The project is documented by a written report; photographs; a videotape; official brochures; the initial plan for the festival; an assortment of items (programs, newspaper articles, flyers, posters, bumper stickers) from nearly every year of the festival; sample stationery, patches, jewelry, stickers, and postcards; and a strawberry cookbook!
