Riverside, California: Fairmount Park

A part of the Riverside community since the founding of the city in 1870, Fairmount Park had a 1998 Centennial rededication that featured an old-fashioned community picnic, a display of historical photographs and memorabilia, and a time capsule to be opened in 50 years. Landscape design of the park was done by the famed Olsted brothers in 1911, and the Fairmount Park Committee strives to the retain the prized natural look. Over the years the park has grown from 30 acres to over 200, and is remarkable for a California city park in that it has several lakes, Lake Evans and Fairmount Lake, within its perimeter.

Included in project documentation are a spiral-bound booklet: "Fairmount Park: Riverside's Treasure"; 26 photos of the Park, its Centennial, and the time capsule; the history and mission of the Fairmount Park Citizens Committee and a list of projects accomplished; a list of organizations and people who participated in the Park's Centennial Celebration; a flyer/program/map of the Centennial event; a time capsule "Letter to the Future"; and copies of newspaper articles.
