New River Gorge Bridge Day
This event is held the third Saturday in October at
the New River Gorge Bridge, which has the world's longest single
arch steel span. On Bridge Day, the bridge is open to pedestrians,
and a variety of activities draw up to a quarter of a million
people. Among the events are parachuting and rappelling
demonstrations, BASE (building, antenna, span, and earth) jumping,
and organized hikes. At 876 feet above the New River, the bridge is
the second highest in the country, and the views are
spectacular.
