Historic Pullman Community

Designated as a City of Chicago, a State of Illinois and a National Landmark, the Historic Pullman Community is the site of nearly 1,000 architecturally significant buildings and rowhouses. Pullman was America's first planned model industrial town and made significant contributions to rail travel in America and the world. As the railroad industry developed, George M. Pullman established the Pullman Palace Car Company to manufacture railroad cars. Funded by Pullman at a total cost of $8 million, the town was built on 3,000 acres west of Lake Calumet in 1880 to provide housing for his company workers. He established a complete town around the company where employees of all income levels could live, shop, and play.
