Skipjack Racing on the Chesapeake Bay
The Skipjack is Maryland's state boat, and the
Chesapeake Bay's fleet is the last commercial fishery to operate
under sail in the United States. Races between the vessels have
been conducted for decades. Deale Island's races date to the
1950's, while Cambridge and Havre de Grace have offered recent
challenges. Documentation will include oral histories from living
captains, newspaper articles, archival photographs, and video
footage of recent events.
