SCOPE

Nanotechnology is defined in K. Eric Drexler’s Engines of Creation as a ”technology based on the manipulation of individual atoms and molecules to build structures to complex, atomic specifications.” Since nano- signifies one billionth, one nanometer is one billionth of a meter. Nanotechnology is concerned either with reducing the size of materials to nanometer size, or more generally, with individual atoms and molecules or groups of them. Nanotechnology, which is based on biology and physics, provides for the manipulation of individual atoms and molecules to produce materials with precise, predictable properties. Applications include microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), quantum computing, nanomedicine, nanoelectronics, carbon nanotubes, self assembly, nanoscale materials, ultra-sensitive biosensors, smart materials, molecular motors, shape memory materials, DNA template chemistry, advanced microfabrication, and molecular biology.

This compilation provides references to a variety of materials and sources in the collections of the Library of Congress useful in researching nanotechnology. Not intended to be a comprehensive bibliography, this guide is designed- -as the name of the series implies- -to put the reader ”on target.”
